The Anatomy Lesson series marks a shift in medium while holding the line on intent. Heather Straka trades paint for large‑format photographs created with a seasoned fashion team, yet the hallmarks remain: immaculate surfaces, measured colour, and composed, cinematic poise. Photography has long underpinned her practice; since 2004 she has staged carefully lit sessions with meticulously groomed models for her paintings. Here that engine moves to the foreground with younger, mostly Japanese sitters—each posed with a cigarette—so the cool control of her painterly language reads with photographic clarity.

At the centre is a contemporary riff on Rembrandt’s 1632 The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, informed by Straka’s time in the University of Otago dissecting room during her 2008 Frances Hodgkins Fellowship. A pale, androgynous “body” on a gurney is encircled by uniformed observers, sharpening questions about looking and being looked at, the roles of artist and model, and how images assign meaning. Nearby, a row of red‑uniformed portraits—near‑identical in format against Straka’s signature greenish‑grey ground—invites close reading of small shifts in gaze, brow, head tilt, and cigarette hold. The effect is quietly dramatic: desire held in check, discretion edging into mystery, restraint carrying the charge.

Over the past two decades, Heather Straka has developed a precise, conceptually driven painting practice that probes power, identity, and cultural symbolism. Working primarily in figurative modes—poised, cinematic portraits and incisive still life—she uses immaculate surfaces, restrained palettes, and a deliberately staged gaze to unsettle familiar narratives. Recurring motifs—uniforms, flags, religious and national emblems, and objects marked by colonial or gendered histories—operate as agents of critique, where seduction and disquiet arrive together.

Straka’s studio is a site of serial experimentation, testing how context and framing recalibrate meaning. Repositioning material from art history, propaganda, and popular media, she collapses hierarchies between “high” and “low” to expose how style confers authority. Her cool, exacting finish heightens the charge: neutral expressions, cropped gestures, and emblematic objects become pressure points for reading race, class, and nation. The result is a sustained inquiry into representation—how images authorize stories, and how painting can pry those stories open.

Dissected Parlour confronts shifting gender and cultural power in the post‑Weinstein and #MeToo era. Through meticulously staged photographs that fuse art‑historical references with Straka’s dark wit, power‑dressed figures challenge colonial and patriarchal symbols—most pointedly the piano, an icon in Aotearoa’s cultural memory from Jane Campion’s film The Piano. The scenes stage tension and reversal: women in red armbands poised to ignite change, a non‑binary airline hostess screaming defiance, a returning burqa figure signaling visibility, hulking men failing to reassert control, and a child amid the rubble contemplating what comes next.

Working across film and paint, Heather Straka’s technically precise practice is known for provocation without apology. Building on The Anatomy Lesson and Blood Lust, this series sharpens her long‑running interrogation of stereotype, surface, and spectacle—where composition is lush, humor is caustic, and roles blur between protest and pageant to expose how power is performed, contested, and undone.

Blood Lust Series, 2012

Blood Lust is Heather Straka’s 2012 photo series from her William Hodges Fellowship in Invercargill. Six local athletes, a stylist’s exacting touch, and a studio stacked with benches, chalkboards, and taxidermy create dense, theatrical tableaux—part trophy room, part science lab.

Straka teases the myths of masculinity and desire: immaculate whites, blonde comb-overs, stuffed beasts, guns, and hints of testosterone equation diagrams. Surfaces seduce—creams, greys, reds—while identities tilt and blur, the artist shifting between hunter and hunted, naturalist and provocateur.

Isolation Hotel, 2021

Isolation Hotel was an immersive art experience by Auckland artist Heather Straka, presented by Canterbury Museum in collaboration with SCAPE Public Art. Visitors checked in to a purpose-built set evoking a once‑opulent, now timeworn 1930s German hotel, which served as the stage for a suite of Straka’s photographs. Featuring a diverse cast of enigmatic characters seeking refuge, the images echoed the drama of Caravaggio, Rubens, and Rembrandt, hinting at soap‑opera backstories, secrets, and dates with destiny.

The project invited participation as much as observation. Guests were encouraged to find a character to identify with and to use the set as a backdrop for their own photographs—projecting personal dreams, desires, and anxieties into the scene. A program curated by Audrey Baldwin activated the hotel with life drawing, poetry, theatre, artist interventions, film screenings, and cabaret, turning the installation into a living set that sparked conversation and play.

New Portrait Series

This unique series of photographic portraits was debuted by Heather to fund her largest set ambition and photographic series to date for Isolation Hotel in 2021.

Much like the Florentine Medici family, who are most well known for their Renaissance patronage of the arts, depicted by artists of their time, individuals can become the subjects of artwork.

The set forms the backdrop for a new portrait series of Heather’s moody gothic brand of photographs that recall the epic, heroic history and mythology painting of Caravaggio, Rubens and Rembrandt, hinting at soap opera-esque backstories, secrets and dates with destiny.

Individuals, couples and family groups are invited to be transformed by Heather and her team of expert film stylists, photographer, lighting and set designers into photographs of their own.

Artist Heather Straka is restaging her highly popular portrait series in Cromwell at Bendigo XV Hanger in 2026.
